Unintentional shootings

The overwhelming majority involve improperly stored firearms in the home. One of the most preventable categories of all.

of all U.S. gun deaths are suicides. The largest, least visible, and most preventable category. The majority of victims are men, often in rural areas, frequently using a firearm already in the home.

What We Do

Our work is organized around five commitments. Each addressing a specific gap in how America responds to gun violence.

Earlier

Most gun violence is preceded by detectable signals. A deteriorating mental state. A credible threat. A pattern of escalating domestic violence. Those signals scatter across schools, clinics, and crisis lines that often don't talk to each other. We surface them in time to act.

Smarter

Educators, clinicians, and community workers do prevention today with tools built for an earlier era. Applied responsibly, modern AI can extend their reach. Handling the signal triage that human capacity alone cannot.

Connected

No school, hospital, or community organization can see the whole picture alone. Prevention requires connecting fragmented warning signals across every system that touches a person's life, with strict consent and civil-liberties protection.

Accountable

The laws that reduce gun violence already exist. Background checks, secure-storage requirements, extreme-risk protections. Too many fail in practice because systems to apply, track, and measure them don't exist. We build that accountability layer.

Trusted

Technology in this category has to earn its place. We deploy only what we can stand behind on safety, accuracy, transparency, and accountability. We publish what works and what doesn't.

For more than a decade, the American conversation about gun violence has played out almost entirely at the policy level. Pass the law. Block the law. Win the election. Lose the election. That fight matters, and capable organizations are carrying it.

But policy moves on a different clock than people in crisis. While America argues, communities still bury their children. Schools still rehearse drills for tragedies that have already happened. Clinicians still send patients home with little more than a phone number.

The technology to make modern prevention possible has not yet been built. That is what Gun Safety First exists to build.

We work alongside the organizations carrying the policy fight. Complementing them. Where they win new protections, we build the accountability layer that turns good policy into real outcomes.

Year One Priorities

Gun Safety First is in its founding phase. Our first-year priorities are deliberate and specific. Every dollar contributed at this stage is foundational.

Build the
technology

Develop and pilot the first version of our prevention technology in partnership with community organizations, schools, and healthcare systems. Real-world deployment from day one.

Anchor the
research

Establish formal partnerships with academic institutions to evaluate what we build as we build it, with the rigor and independence the field deserves.

Train
the field

Develop training programs for the educators, clinicians, and community workers who will use our tools. Our work only matters if it lands in capable hands.

Publish
openly

Commit to public reporting on our progress, methodology, and results. The field has too few organizations willing to do this in the open.
